Momentum vs. Hubstaff
Hubstaff pioneered automated time tracking. Momentum takes the next step: turning that raw activity into fair, role-aware intelligence — focus scoring, deep-work analysis, and trends — without leaning on screenshots.
Three differences the checkboxes miss
Feature grids flatten real design decisions. Here's how Momentum and Hubstaff actually diverge in approach.
Moving from Hubstaff in four steps
A realistic migration path — most teams complete it inside a month, with a parallel-run period for confidence.
Export your teams and projects from Hubstaff, then mirror the org in Momentum as departments — that's the unit app rules, overrides, and dashboard comparisons operate on.
Roll the Windows, macOS, and Linux agents out with your existing MDM. New machines land in Pending; approve them in batches so nothing reports before IT signs off.
Recreate your productive/unproductive app lists as Global App Rules, then add per-department overrides where one list doesn't fit all — the step Hubstaff's flat rules never quite allowed.
Keep Hubstaff running while Momentum's Timeline and Workforce Dashboard fill in. Compare a pay period side by side, tune thresholds and expected desk hours in Settings, then retire the old agent.
The bottom line
Choose Momentum if you want intelligence and trust over surveillance — fair scoring, deep-work insight, and a rollout your team will actually accept.
Switching from Hubstaff, answered
We bill clients from Hubstaff timesheets — can Momentum replace that?+
Momentum captures active time automatically and rolls it up by user, department, and day, which covers most internal accountability and client-reporting needs. If your billing depends on Hubstaff-specific invoicing features, keep that workflow until you've validated Momentum's reports against a full billing cycle.
Do we lose screenshot evidence when we switch?+
Screenshots are optional in Momentum rather than the default. Most teams find the Timeline's active/idle strip, app usage, and input counts a stronger and less invasive record — but if a client contract requires screenshots, you can enable them deliberately.
How long does migration actually take?+
Agent deployment is the long pole and follows your normal software-rollout process. Org setup, app rules, and settings are typically an afternoon; plan on two weeks of parallel running before you switch reporting over.
