Whatever you end up choosing, these are the eight questions that separate a measurement system your org will trust from one it will fight.
Manual timers miss reality. Look for desktop agents on Windows, macOS, and Linux that capture active windows, idle time, input counts — and offline apps like IDEs, not just browser tabs.
Time totals aren't enough. Ask whether the platform shows device posture (encryption, patch level, antivirus), data-movement visibility, and fleet-wide risk ranking — or whether that's a separate tool you'll have to buy and babysit.
Machines should enroll pending approval, report only once approved, and be remotely uninstallable at offboarding. Ask how the vendor handles a stolen laptop or a departed contractor.
One productive/unproductive list for the whole company is unfair by construction. Insist on global rules plus per-department overrides, and a neutral 'unmarked' state for ambiguous time.
A productivity score should be explainable: which apps counted, against which expected desk hours, under whose rules. If you can't reconstruct the number, you can't defend it in a review.
Leaders need org KPIs, expected-vs-actual trends, and department comparisons before individual drilldowns. Tools that lead with per-person feeds invite micromanagement.
People should see their own timeline, activity, and scores. Transparency is the difference between a rollout that sticks and one that gets quietly sabotaged.
The agent runs on every machine, all day. Demand visibility into its own CPU and memory usage, plus accessible daemon, installer, and upgrade logs when something misbehaves.
Agencies, BPOs, and holding companies need true multi-tenant isolation — separate rules, settings, and data per organisation, not one workspace with folders.
The newest blind spot for most leaders: which AI assistants your teams actually use, and who's showing early signs of overwork before they resign. Ask if the tool surfaces either — most classic time trackers surface neither.
Where Momentum fits — and where it doesn't
No tool wins every evaluation. Here's ours, stated plainly.
