How Momentum reads documentation & knowledge base time

Coda time is captured by the desktop agent like any other app — here's how it flows into classification, scores, and dashboards.

01
Making knowledge work visible

Writing documentation is the classic undervalued task: high leverage, low visibility. Momentum's agents capture time in docs and wiki tools with the same fidelity as any application — active duration plus typing activity — so a morning spent writing a runbook registers as sustained productive work on the Timeline instead of vanishing into 'miscellaneous' time.

02
Balance, not policing

On the Workforce Dashboard, department time distribution shows how much of a team's week goes to documentation versus execution tools. That is a planning signal: a support team drifting away from the knowledge base predicts ticket-quality problems, while an engineering team that never touches docs accrues invisible debt. Classification makes the trade-off measurable, not moralised.

Where Coda should land in your app rules

Documentation tools are safely Productive in Global App Rules for almost every department — writing things down is universal work. The nuance is reading-heavy roles: if a department mostly consumes docs, the time is still legitimate. Use Unmarked only when a wiki doubles as a social or personal space you don't want scored.

Coda + Momentum, answered

Can Momentum tell writing from passive reading?+

Input counts give you the signal: sustained active time with steady keystrokes reads as authoring, while active time with minimal input suggests reading or reference use. Both appear on the Timeline; neither content nor text is captured.

Should a knowledge base ever be Non-Productive?+

Rarely. If a specific department misuses a docs tool, apply a department override rather than a global rule — Non-Productive globally would penalise every legitimate writer in the org.

How does docs time affect productivity scores?+

Time in apps marked Productive for the user's department counts fully toward their productivity score and active desk time, exactly like execution tools — Momentum doesn't rank app categories against each other.
